actually if I saw a white person doing that I'd say the same thing. I know there are nutcases out there that would do that kind of thing but the apparent circumstances of this case i.e. some shopkeepers beating up some thieves then I'd be very surprised if that happened so openly in a western democracy. So I still think there exists a cruel streak in chinese mainstream culture that would be limited to a lunatic fringe in most other countries.

Right, beating up a criminal is bad since it doesn't happen in the West, but beating up fans of another football team is okay? My problem isn't with your revulsion at this, it's that your first reaction is not "sick men", but horrible Chinese ppl. Honestly this kind of thing is so common in developing countries, and was common in the recent past in the West too (strike breakers, race riots, police brutality). Are Africans, Indians, Latinos, and your parents' generation, all horrible ppl?

Alright alright...I just felt pissed off. I think another commentator in this thread said the same thing and I was influenced by that. Maybe I'm subconsciously racist towards chinese people (i hope not)...anyway these countries need to develop the rule of law and apply it judiciously. I can't stand that kind of street justice being carried out so brazenly

you're commenting on mainstream chinese culture based on a youtube video? have you ever been to asia or gotten to know a chinese person? learn about societies before you bash. from all the videos of gang violence, racism, and ridiculous flame wars coming out of western countries, with all their idiotic comments, I too can take a narrow view and claim the west is filled with misogynist uneducated homophobic violent bigots. but I've come to know western culture and realize it offers much more.

I've been to Japan. I'm sure it's completely different and more civilized than China. I used to work in a chinese restaurant. Those chefs were really unfriendly and sullen. They were bloody hard workers though...unfortunately the female proprietor decided to fire me one day just out of the blue for no good reason. Terrible people skills...and the wages were awful too. Then I sort of made this chinese gf but turns out all she wanted was to use me to get a passport.

Fired by a Chinese restaurant, used by a Chinese gf. Now I understand your resentment. Lol. Like I said, fair enough. Although your stories sound made up for some reason. Not that that couldn't happen, in fact it's pretty common, just seemed too stereotypical, if you don't mind me saying. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Believe me, those things did happen to me. On the grand scale of things they are no big deal. I just think the chinese are moulded by their culture to be very business minded and lacking in genuine warmth. I guess that's why they are often called inscrutable.

Or maybe the language barrier and the stress of living in a foreign environment had something to do with it. And remember, the Chinese "environment" is as big as Europe, so plenty of different "moulds" in there. If these things actually happened to you I can understand the negative impressions, but I wouldn't pronounce my final verdict on a people of over a billion just yet.

thieves or not, this is fucking insane... harsh law is one thing, but torturing people in a middle of the street is just too much. I know, different culture and mentality and all that crap, but this is fucking medieval. im just suprised they have thieves in China
