Leider was certainly not saving her voice up to the last failed C. She was nailed the 2Bb's only seconds before. Traubel attempted this C with Toscanini to the exact same effect. MISSED IT. Flagstad knew better. After about 1940 she just left it out and sang the Ab with the tenor. If you want to hear this note nailed, listen to Varnay or Nilsson (or even Rita Hunter). Flagstad sings the C on the studio version with Melchior, but it is very tame. Ms. V and Ms. N are super-human.

I have a truly awful live concert performance of this same scene with Melchior-Traubel and Toscanini at the podium. (Melchior was awsome) Trabel sang the high C a half step flat and Toscanini didn't allow the singers to breathe. I am also a fan of Leider, who was Melchior's Favorite Brunhilde. It is likely that she was marking here.

Yes, you are probably right, I forgot it was a rehersal, because of the costumes. Since you mention the great Flagstad, I read in the booklet of the CD of the "live" Gotterdammerung Act II (Leider, Melchior / Beecham / Covent Garden, 1936) that Flagstad never managed to express the psychological changes of Brunnhilde's torment & betrayal in her singing of this Act, whereas Leider achieves here a truly in-depth interpretation! (I like both of them)

I disagree - this was a rehearsal. Leider was probably just saving her voice, so she made no effort on the last note and cut it off early. If she tanked notes like that in performances, she would not be remembered as one of history's great heldensoprans. Incidentally, Flagstad was in the house during this dress rehearsal - she was the third norn.

I adore Frida Leider, especially her Isolde, but I think that -in this rehersal- her last "heil" is a disaster. She tries to blend it with the third one and make them one (something very impressive) but fails horribly. Her voice betrays her and she has to cut it short even before Lorenz starts his own last "heil". Pity the actual performance was never recorded live.... Great video though!
