Its so true its all about what you can see these days but I am not dictated by what I see its all about what I hear and I think in the end the ear will rule that is why we still get people like fantasia, ruben and jennifer hudson sliping through the net of real talent verses looks.

i must say, j. hud was good, she even made me cry, however, true art is done, on stage without edit, etc,, mis hoilday will always be the best for this body of work, i guess she really was EFFIE, cuz, why is she not singing this day,, ie,, new music,, why,,, music went to the eyes, and not the ear, after, the 80's, yes viedo really ruded the true artform of music,, music was not ment for the eye,, it was for the ear

This woman is amazing! I am always in awe of a singer that isn't afraid to get "ugly" to portray a song. Especially in musical theater. If you really feel it in your gut, we should be able to see it in your face. I LOVE THIS WOMAN!!!

Hey gang, ok I'VE watched both performances, what I LIKE ABOUT both of them, is that they are BOTH powerful, soulful, stirring renditions, BUT! The biggest difference is, EVERYTIME I watch JHUDS performance, I GET CHILLS, I mean my spine tingles, EVERYTIME, I think its because of what one of the posters said: " ITS A STORY" in the way she sings the song, JHOLLI, is singing the song, what kills me is the HA HA part in JHOLLI, that's what I THINK ruins the song for me.

And she did an OUTSTANDTING job, especially for it being her first time. She gave Jennifer Holiday a run for her money with this song and although everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I don't know of anyone (unless they are some undiscovered talent) who could have reprised this song and this role and done a better job than Jennifer Hudson!!!

I think you all make great points. And so much respect is due to Jennifer Holiday. She created Effie Melody White and man o man what a hell of job she did. BUT Jennifer Hudson in her own right created her version of Effie too.

No offense to Miss Hudson, but she owes her fame to Mrs. Holliday. Without Holliday's interpretation of this piece from sheet music, the song as we know it now would not have a voice. The movie would not exist if Mrs. Holliday could not carry this on Broadway for as long as she did, and thus, Miss Hudson would have had to find another way to fame. Don't get me wrong, Hudson is extremely talented, but I have yet to see her create something original to display her brilliance to me.

I was in the audience the very first time the show was performed in previews, in Boston. I remember the show going over well enough until the point where she tears this up, and I'll never forget how when she finished EVERYONE stood up as one, hollering and crying -- the standing ovation went on forever. We'd all just seen something amazing and fierce and historic right before our eyes! I'm glad for Miss Hudson's success, but this is the original...and still the best!

did u know that the EXACT same thing happened to Jennifer Hudson at the movie premier and the audience stood in an uproar of applause, which included many hollywood celebrities, singers, actors, and MANY broadway actors and actresses? I also LOVE J Holliday, but I believe JHud has adapted her own take on Effie and it is historis in its own right.

i refuse to believe the hype! until someone recognizable goes on record and states holliday has an evil personality! just as i refuse to believe hudson and beyonce are beefing! its all publicity for the film...its sad that some have to be torn down in the process..

No, trust me, she doesn't. A lot of people won't work with her, which should tell you something. She's talented and she's worked hard to pull her life together but I've seen her treat people like absolute dirt. I've seen people start as fans and end up giving away her CDs. It's too sad. I was a fan for 15 years. I'd like to remember her as I thought she was BEFORE I met and worked with her.

I agree with you. I have recently heard so many horror stories about J. Holliday treatment of people. The talent is undeniable, but the attitude has to go. And I thought Diana Ross was the queen bitch, here's a bigger one. I love her though, I just hope J. Hudson doesn't turn into a monster diva, she's such a kind and sweet girl.

but dont you find it funny that these so called horror stories only pop up recently...ive never heard any of this till now...sounds like a sympathy-publicity stunt to me...people knew that some would be hesitant to embrace hudsons version because holliday "killt" it...so lets make folks hate holliday so the embrace hudson transition will be that much easier...just my theory...but in any event-i saw an advance screening of dreamgirls and the movie is great!!!

I was once a huge fan. I worshipped her and her voice. Then I got a "dream" job working for her during one of her longer term gigs. She was a nightmare. Rude, unkind to others, self-centered, neurotic and did some things I still can't believe to her fellow cast and producers, workers, etc. Behind her back people called her "crazy". I wonder. Anyway, no longer a fan.
